wakefulness

reading upon the couch

re-dreaming dreams

Finding it hard to remain awake this morning, awake, asleep, startling awake..the cycle spins, daylight climbs eastern mountains, dawn fades to memory.

Plans and Connections

I spent the morning going through my contacts, cleaning out and updating things. There were so many folks in there who I had for some random project, many from my time in Real Estate, who I haven’t contacted in years. I felt puzzled by the number of contacts with limited information and no memory of them. One nice thing in Google: looking at the email threads. For many of these folks, there was simply nothing. I spent many years as a chronic collector of contacts. Here’s the end result.
My intent: get my list down to those I know, and build a plan to maintain connection. There are so many great people I’ve met over the years who I really wish I was still in contact with. I intend to fix that.
I understand that many contacts I’ve kept are people who have moved on from me. And that they may have no interest in reconnecting. I’m good with that, though I’ll be a bit disappointed. However, I recognize that none of us can do everything. All of us need to focus.
Also in my plans are to use this site to communicate better, too. Post more regularly and with those life updates. Multiple channels for connection and all of that.
I hope all is well with you during this time of COVID. What are you up to? What are you most proud of? I’d love to hear.

another day past

feeling the grace of sunlight

soon, petals will fall

  • I love the flowers i see on my walks. This one out from yesterday. Today I didn’t get out. My right foot ended up with some brutal blisters. Make sure your shoes fit right, and aren’t too worn. They’ll thank you for it.

The Opportunity of Morning Sunlight

morning sunlight

breeze changes direction

opportunity

I see so much opportunity, and how privilege feeds that. How I can pick and choose amongst these choices, while so many others struggle to get by.

How can I leverage privilege and expand opportunity for all?

Is this how I make the world better?

Flowers On My Walk

walking in sunlight
renewed life fueled by its grace
moving through my space

Living in the suburbs north of Seattle, I see many flowers. You probably have no trouble discerning that from my posts. As a young man, I fled these burbs. Life’s sense of humor, though, kicked in hard. I know life just about a hundred feet from the house I grew up in.

The passing time brings perspective. Now I feel a deep love for this place. My connections deep: friendships, history, I can look at a spot and talk about decades of change, and stability. These suburbs resist change well, but not perfectly.

These flowers which bored me as a boy and young man, well, they now bring me happiness. Years of growth, of death, of change, yet the bees still buzz, flowers still bloom, and summer becomes autumn.

Some Design Observations

I have a couple of design considerations/mediations today.

  1. I just found this gem on Pinterest. A clever use of the fire extinguisher. It draws your attention to it, but not in an obnoxious way.
  2. Related to the above:
Building, Belonging, Becoming
  • Lastly, here’s a little experiment I created for my church. Sort of an computer based doodle.

Saturday Morning, August 1

A Saturday Morning Haiku

dawn hidden by clouds

crow’s vociferous debate

I return to sleep

Crows created quite a ruckus this morning. A multitude gathered, some kind of mass debate. Congress arguing tax cuts. They abruptly dissolve. My mind drifts back to dreams.

Famous Moments in History, Reimagined By Centrists

Here’s a comic from The Nib that gave me pause. What are the bounds of free speech? A what point does “centrism” enable the destructive forces of hate?

Comics provide a unique voice in the modern political climate that I value. This particular series was created by Kasia Babis. The link will take you to a large list of their work. You really should check them out.
