Tonight’s Haiku: July 26, 2020

delights of summer

A good day with friends, time in the sunlight, absorbing the life-giving rays. Refreshing my soul during the trials of this pandemic. Life is good.

A Nightmare Haiku

Unclothed while at school

My adolescent terrors

While birds remain unphased

This was a response to a poetry prompt on Instagram. This is what popped into mind.

Om Malik: How Do We Look At The Present?

I always appreciate the wit and wisdom of Om Malik. Today he tweeted this, which gives me great pause:

2020, a year of havoc and confusion, of transition and destruction, forcing to face our histories against our deepest resistance. Such a dramatic and violent reaction? Will we survive?

Half done or half over? Perhaps a question of optimism: half-full vs half-empty? In this time of pandemic, optimism seems myopic. But, I believe the opposite. Humanity holds what it needs to overcome our destructive tendencies. So I hold on to hope.

Glorious Daisies : A Late Night Haiku

I wrote this haiku a few months ago, but some glitch kept it from posting. Glad I found it, and now to share it with you.

A Thursday Morning Haiku

early morning

small birds converse

time for tea

Early morning, no one else awake. I sip tea and listen to the birds sing.

For this poem and image I used the app “InstaQuote” on my Kindle Fire. I like the paper background and the font choices. It’s my preferred app on my Kindle since there’s no Canva app.

Often with my haiku I seek a minimalist, handwritten ascetic. For me, that captures the essence and history of haiku.

Grace: A Haiku

Here is my contribution to today’s Word of the Day challenge: Grace.

I think a lot about grace. Its importance both to us, and to society. How grace enables humans to function together, and is the magic elixir that ends conflict. And that grace is undervalued, perhaps even reviled. We live in brutal times, my friends.

Fun Design: Do Not Disturb Sign

Every Tuesday I am in a Zoom call. I thought I’d create my own Do Not Disturb sign. And, as a Star Wars fan, when I hear the word “disturb” I think of Darth Vader’s line in a New Hope “I find your lack of faith disturbing”. So, here you go.

Haiku, Minimalism, Modernism, Design

Posted this haiku on my Instagram page this morning. Exploring minimalism, the essence of haiku, combining it with a modernistic design. To accomplish this, I opted for a Helvetica-esque font, right alignment, and no ornamentation. I hope you like it.
