Black History Month Meditation 2: Langston Hughes

Slowly I study the man
Delighting in imagery
Phrases bending to his will
And the flow of his heart

Slowly gazing into the soul of
Of a poet’s ghost
Tendrils of dreams
Glimmering in morning dew
Fading at the touch
Of my privilege

A Remembrance: Mary Tyler Moore

Awoke with a song,
Mary Tyler Moore’s theme.
Quirky, jaunty and cheerful,
With a tinge of sadness.
A bright point in my youth,
Faded into night.

Such is the way of things;
Joy blends with sorrow/
This complex dish,
Life.

The Smoker

Walking past a smoker

So very easy to judge

Addiction’s impacts

Yet who am I

To critique anyone’s

Frailties?

Black History Month Meditation 1: Langston Hughes

Reading Langston Hughes

<

p style=”font-family:’Helvetica Neue’, Arial, sans, sans-serif;”>And about his vocational drifting

<

p style=”font-family:’Helvetica Neue’, Arial, sans, sans-serif;”>I have a thing for the wanderer

<

p style=”font-family:’Helvetica Neue’, Arial, sans, sans-serif;”>My own career meanders

<

p style=”font-family:’Helvetica Neue’, Arial, sans, sans-serif;”>Weaving back and forth

<

p style=”font-family:’Helvetica Neue’, Arial, sans, sans-serif;”>Across green fertile fields

<

p style=”font-family:’Helvetica Neue’, Arial, sans, sans-serif;”>Vibrancy within each step

<

p style=”font-family:’Helvetica Neue’, Arial, sans, sans-serif;”>

<

p style=”font-family:’Helvetica Neue’, Arial, sans, sans-serif;”>I’m spending Black History Month exploring black ports and their great works. Langston Hughes came to mind first. I’m also thinking of Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison. Do you have ideas? I’d love to hear about up-and-coming poets.

This morning’s haiku: Morning Potential

Morning potential
Before the day’s chaos starts
Plans get distorted

Darkness Descending

Darkness descending
That living within our hearts
Often thrives at night

A meditation on love

A tactical strike
Evading the defenses
Safe within their heart?
