Immortality

Immortality
This, driving human dreamers
The ultimate fear

Freedom from Pain

There’s only one way
For death’s sting to be vanquished
You must avoid love

News received
Unpleasantly
Deeply tinged
With sadness

Into a mirror
Gazing, wondering,
Unshaven for this
Weekend
Grey dominates
My beard

Change comes,
Celebrated at times
Or with dread
But it comes
Inevitably

Flame flutters
Victim of the breeze
Candles flicker
Departing from
Pedestals
Into the
Stars

Birds sing free of care
Below sunlit grass some sleep
Silent war echos

After a Nightmare

Woke from a nightmare
Dreams of death and resistance
To birdsong outside

Childhood’s Collapse

Daily decay’s
Raging presence
Death’s fragrance
Fills me deeply.

Then that morning’s
Ragged breathing,
Brutal truth of
Impending silence.

Mortality

Our mortality
Brutally enforced mandate
The demands of time
