Mind-Full vs Mindful

Found this gem on Pinterest today:

I expect that, in today’s culture in the US, this is an easy post to connect with. Well, at least I do! There’s always so much bumping around in my mind. For several years I practiced focused mediation, and I got more aligned with the horse here. I still work on that, but not with as much dedication.

I’ve found that I miss out on so much when lost in the flurry of modern life. Which makes me think of the classic Thoreau quote: “…I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.”

So, take a reminder early in the year to budget time to step out of the busyness of life and, well, just embrace living.

Happy Monday!

As I’m fond of bicycles and libraries, this image spoke to me well.

I hope you are well, and that your new week is filled with joy and vibrance.

Quote of the Day

My friend and fellow blogger Pooja over at Life’s Fine Whine posted this quote yesterday. I felt this is one that strikes home, and is important to embrace if you’re living focused on growth.

Speaking for myself, it’s easy to expect that enacting positive life changes will all feel like smooth joy. No, often, it starts out HARD! Whether a diet, new exercise regime, training for a new role for work…with any of these changes, we start out needing to work hard in order to overcome our life’s inertia.

So, I recommend checking our Pooja’s blog, Life’s Fine Wine.

Quote of the day: everyone’s contribution is important

One thing that I need to do better: value my contributions. It’s so easy to fall into the trap of “my work does nothing”. This mindset sucks life away. Contributes to depressing destructiveness.

Remember: you have value. Your work matters. Your life matters.

Quote of the Day

Marcus Aurelius quote

I’ve long been familiar with Marcus Aurelius, though have never taken the deep dive into his work. However, this statement captures a deep truth for me.

This quote reminds me of a Steven Covey concept: Focusing on your Area of Influence. When we focus our efforts and energy on what we can impact, we become effective. Add that to “…you have power over your mind…”, and I see the power of focusing on our thoughts. Controlling our attitudes, I guess.

A Wee Bit of Motivation

I find this quote by Sun Tzu very apt. Don’t believe you are entitled to success. Seek to earn it. That is the path. Or, as is popular in the current Zeitgeist (which is a bit redundant, I guess), “this is the way”.

Bruce Lee Quote: Be Water, My Friend

Bruce Lee

For me, this is a famous and well-known quote. However, not everyone spends as much time with martial artists as I do. This came up in conversation today, and my friend hadn’t heard this quote. So, I thought it would be valuable to share.

I think this is particularly relevant today. Our fast-paced, manic, ever-shifting world being fluid and able to adjust is a critical career skill now. Be formless, take the form of wherever life takes you. There’s value in that.

James Baldwin: Today’s Black History Month Poet

James Baldwin Quote

This Baldwin poem resonates with me. Love’s grace comes with great power, inspiring fears and conquering cowardice.

Avoiding criticism
Avoiding criticism quote by Aristotle

Someone, somewhere, won’t like you no matter what you do. If you’re the nicest person ever, someone will despise you for being nice.

Therefore, be true to yourself.

Is This Gary Snyder or Obi Wan Kenobi?

Maybe I’m just silly, but I see similarities here. Maybe I like Snyder so much because he’s a Jedi Master?

Gary Snyder Nature Quote
Nature is not a place to visit, it is home.
