Quote of the Day

Marcus Aurelius quote

I’ve long been familiar with Marcus Aurelius, though have never taken the deep dive into his work. However, this statement captures a deep truth for me.

This quote reminds me of a Steven Covey concept: Focusing on your Area of Influence. When we focus our efforts and energy on what we can impact, we become effective. Add that to “…you have power over your mind…”, and I see the power of focusing on our thoughts. Controlling our attitudes, I guess.

Winter Haikus

A friend of mine just forwarded me this comic featuring some clever haiku/senryu, and I wanted to share these with you. I find them delightful.

Unfortunately, the creator wasn’t cited in the email. Fortunately, a quick image search turned up “Cul De Sac, the blog of Richard Thompson“. Here’s the link to the original post, from 2010.

An Asimov Quote For Your Friday

“Education is not something you can finish” ~Isaac Asimov

Dr. Asimov’s work had a profound impact on me. I fully embrace everything that this quote entrails. Continued learning is key to a vibrant life.

Late Night Haiku

The Scent Of Rain

As the sunlight fades
Comforting darkness flows in
With the scent of rain

It’s set to rain overnight and into tomorrow. Many of the Seattleites I know are ready for a bit of cool rain. I know, we’re a weird lot. When everything is green it feels the most like home.

Keep Breathing

Keep breathing deeply

Listen to the birds singing

Sunlight upon trees

Life’s tensions overwhelm at times. Remember to stop, focus on breathing deeply, controlled. Today, while doing this, the bird’s singing became vibrant. It’s what’s really important in life.

A Haiku In The Night

The night’s grace appears

Kindness in the dark’s motion

Streetlights; a beacon

There’s a grace to the night, to the calmness brought, to hidden delights, joys unbounded. To rest delivered, and the salvation of our dreams.
