KEXP and the Epicness of Community Radio

On Saturday, I went for a walk while listening to Variety Mix on KEXP (the link is to the streaming archive, which will be valid only for a few weeks). This week is the Fall Fund Drive, and during a break the co-hosts (Morgan & Troy) were talking about some of the music that’s been featured on the station. In particular,  a harpist who played with an effects pedal and a metal credit card. As my musical interests are…eclectic…I HAD to listen to them. Well, I wasn’t in a position to write anything down, and by the time I was, the details were gone. But have no fear, my friends, I was able to email them and ask that weird question. In less than 10 minutes, Morgan replied with the details AND a link to their KEXP musical session (see below). The band is Nout, and their music is wild! I’m delighted to make their acquaintance.

For me, THIS is the power of community radio. This kind of connection is impossible in the world of commercial radio. And I’m all for this! Hence why I’ve been an Amplifier since the program launched. Yes, the variety of music is amazing, but that’s only a part of it. The community that is KEXP, and the other stations in the community radio sphere, are amazing groups of people. So, yes, I recommend you bend your ears their way. I hope you’ll love them as much as I do.
